FOR PROTECTION CHILDREN RIGHTS

In a special Mirror Now report, we bring to you one of the distressing ill effects of Coronavirus pandemic.
The onset of the pandemic has affected all economies and yet another fallout of the virus has been a sharp rise in child marriages in Maharashtra. The number of child marriages in the state has doubled compared to last year. The striking comparison is in the figures of an entire year and this year only till October. This is the highest figure the state has witnessed in past 5 years.
Poverty and uncertainty amidst the pandemic are forcing families to marry off their children before they hit their legal age.
Financial security, schools being shut, migrants returning back to villages and less scrutiny by cops and officials during the pandemic are some of the reasons for the sharp surge.
